Captain Ron Stansel

Ron is a third generation west coast Floridian that grew up playing and ultimately working along the entire gulf coast of the United States. He was born in St Petersburg in 1959 into a family with a long history of commercial and sports fishing. He spent much of his youth on or around the water working and fishing in various capacities aboard his family’s boat and those of his friends and acquaintances.

Mr Stansel also began snorkeling, scuba diving and spear fishing, at a very early age with his father who had taken up these sports in the 50’s. His father first strapped a scuba tank onto his back in a marina swimming pool in 1966 in Port Isabel Texas, and Ron immediately fell in love with the ability to stay under water for long periods of time. However while growing up, it was not at all unusual for these on the water activities to take place, not only in the Gulf of Mexico, but also in some of the fresh water springs around Florida, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. In later years these diving and fishing excursions would extend to the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, where Ron lived in Flamingo. However he ultimately moved to the Caribbean side of the country settling into a Rasta community near Puerto Viejo, where he later helped build a house out of hard wood, and lived in the rain forest for a couple of years, lobster diving and spear fishing to make his living. He also started a small successful coco loco bar, “The Spot,” directly on Playa Cocles beach near Puerto Viejo.

Besides fishing and diving, his other passions consisted of traveling and sailing whenever possible. Thus from the very first time he took pram sailing lessons in Gulfport during the summer of 1968 he has managed to sail the entire Caribbean chain of islands, and has also sailed to dozens of islands up and down the coast of Central and South America. He has lived and worked out of the Virgin Islands over the years and has spent a great deal of time in Jamaica and the Bahamas. His sailing and commercial experiences have also taken him across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea. These unique experiences have given him the inspiration to create island paintings, sailing paintings and fish paintings as seen through his eyes. Ron’s paintings convey his experiences and adventures that span the globe from the United States to South America and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and Africa.

Therefore whether it is a forgotten past you seek to rekindle, or an unforeseen dream yet to come, why not let a Captain Ron’s Original painting or Gallery wrapped numbered print brighten your day, and help you along on a smooth mental journey to where you want to be. A Journey’s beginning is only a wall away. Enjoy the experience.
